The kids were in bed, Astrid was asleep and the room was quiet. Rapunzel sat at the edge of the bed with boredom and cursed with being wide awake in the middle of the night. Restlessness had come continuously since they returned to Discord. Punz could barely get a wink of sleep before having a crazed nightmare about her powers, Jackson, hurting her kids somehow…
Slipping from the bed Rapunzel was cautious not to wake Astrid. Giving her a light kiss on the cheek Rapunzel slipped out, grabbing a warm jacket to keep her comforted in the cold outside.
Since Discord’s new design Punz felt she was right back at the start of when she came here, lost and confused. The only place she could remember was the place people rarely went, ironic enough. It seems her lack of social interaction was subconscious as well.
Rapunzel found an old car sitting there. It was a sad sight. Punzel sat on the hood, wondering what kind of family or person owned the car before it was sadly abandoned. Were there kids who once took solstice in the seats of this car? Did they cry at the act of having to leave it behind for some unknown or dangerous reason?
Rapunzel prided herself with being an excellent driver. Years after her mother’s death Rapunzel couldn’t sit behind a drivers wheel without shaking and weeping hysterically. Again, the subconscious does wonders in the real world.
A slight scurry of swift feet caught her attention. In the beginning Rapunzel would be gathering her long feet of hair in preparation for a quick getaway. However today it was gone; cut short above her shoulders and dyed brown. Rapunzel didn’t have her mother’s hair. Hiccup was gifted with her medium chestnut shade. Rapunzel inherited her grandmother’s blonde locks. How she wished she was like her mother.
Rapunzel and Hiccup’s mother was not a wonderful woman. She was loud, talkative, and found solstice in bottles. But she was a mother. They appreciated that. The days she’d force herself for days to resists drinks, to prove to her kids that she loved them. Hiccup remembered those nights he’d see his mother pounding at the pillow with tears in her eyes, bottles strewn on the floor, hastily emptied.
Hiccup never told Rapunzel when he saw his mother in that state; she wouldn’t listen even if he did.
Brought back to reality Punz scanned the area around her; it was still night yet not a star in sight. Not even the moon was clear through the clouds.
“Who’s there?” she demanded, considering baring her teeth. Rapunzel was not entirely a vampire. More like a creature. A monster with sharp teeth, black eyes, and deep claws. For now she was normal, controlled.
In the shadows the sunken in skull of death stared her in the eyes. Rapunzel screamed, backing into the hood of the car with wide eyes. Only, as she looked closer, the skull was still, and moved although the face itself was immobile. It was a mask, not death.
“I’m warning you! Stay back!” Rapunzel demanded, claws extending, blood dripping from her knuckles. “Last chance.”
The figure with the skull mask stepped closer, still dark in sight. “Don’t make any rash decisions. You don’t want an innocent woman’s blood on your hands do you?”
Rapunzel scowled, visibly hurt by the statement. “I don’t attack unless provoked, so you better leave.” Her voice was cold and harsh. Rapunzel was in no mood for a fight.
“I was here first. If anything you should leave. I’m no threat.” The woman stated, in the dark Punz made out the shape of a spear, held in the woman’s hand tightly.
“No way. I’m an adult, you can’t order me. Also, that spear is pretty threatening if you ask me.” She crossed her arms, claws sliding back.
“Silly girl. I was only passing through here. You’re much too short tempered to make friends around here. Run off, I’ll be the bigger person and leave when you’re gone.” The woman’s voice was familiar, but Rapunzel ignored the déjà vu.
“That makes no sense. Why should we both leave?”
“It’s a compromise.”
“A silly compromise.”
“Oh so you’re an adult?” the woman teased, toying with the spear in her hands. Rapunzel scoffed.
“Fine. We’ll both stay. This town has changed a great deal since I was last here. So its better I don’t go wandering.” Rapunzel stated.
The woman shrugged, stepping closer but keeping an appropriate distance. “I’ve forgotten how long I was here. I take it you already got your powers from Jack?”
Rapunzel nodded, rubbing at her sore hands. “Uh huh. My brother and I had been here for years before we left. Crazy how much has changed.”
“A brother? You seem the loner type.” The woman commented with a lack of interest.
“Yeah my brother Hiccup moved with me not long after I came here.” Rapunzel kissed at the bleeding knuckles, having no desire for her own blood.
The woman was silent for a while. Rapunzel couldn't tell her expression behind the mask. “I-I should go. I will see you tomorrow.” She turned around hastily, gripping the spear in her hands tightly and firmly.
“Tomorrow? Miss I never agreed-” but she was gone.
